Succinct

“Sometimes you’re 23 and standing in the kitchen of your house making breakfast and brewing coffee and listening to music that for some reason is really getting to your heart. You’re just standing there thinking about going to work and picking up your dry cleaning. And also more exciting things like books you’re reading and trips you plan on taking and relationships that are springing into existence. Or fading from your memory, which is far less exciting. And suddenly you just don’t feel at home in your skin or in your house and you just want home but “Mum’s” probably wouldn’t feel like home anymore either. There used to be the comfort of a number in your phone and ears that listened everyday and arms that were never for anyone else. But just to calm you down when you started feeling trapped in a five-minute period where nostalgia is too much and thoughts of this person you are feel foreign. When you realize that you’ll never be this young again but this is the first time you’ve ever been this old. When you can’t remember how you got from sixteen to here and all the same feel like sixteen is just as much of a stranger to you now. The song is over. The coffee’s done. You’re going to breathe in and out. You’re going to be fine in about five minutes.”

Read ‘coffee’ as hot chocolate and it’s quite precise

SHE WAS LO, PLAIN LO, IN THE MORNING.

I’d like to think that I’m not the kind of person that gets captivated by things to the point of obsession, but one exception is my complete love for Lolita, a book I first picked up as a summer read many years ago. There was something about the sinister sweet context that grasped my attention in an unwavering way. Since then I’ve been able to reacquaint myself with Lolita via Olympia Le Tan’s bag collection (which also happened to feature in a favourite short film of mine) and when I watched an early Stanley Kubrick, black and white adaptation. It’s been incredible to see the work of Nabokov inspire art, film and now fashion too. The Shakuhachi Autumn/Winter collection features a Lolita silk tee that I need to get my hands on. I can see it being on high rotation, loosely tucked into a pencil skirt or leather pants.

IRIDESCENT INVASION

hologram accessories

New Look Sally Holographic Clutch $15.35

Wittner Rafa Heels $74.98

Mirror Hollogram Box Bag $78

Senso Gina Sandals $199

The return of the hologram is not merely a matter of Tupac’s beyond the grave appearance at Coachella. The latest fashion collections prove that three-dimensional photographic imaging should not be bound to the ornamental design of 90s pencil cases. A couple of stand out Spring Summer 2013 pieces are Jonathan Saunders variation of metallic illuminated a-line skirts paired with crew neck nude knits and Burberry Prorsum’s holographic frenzy of collared shift dresses and fitted v neck silhouettes. Stella McCartney’s Resort 2013 collection of white and animal print tailored pieces are accessorized with reflective clutches and even the imminent cult classic, Proenza Schouler PS11 is now available as a pearlescent gem. So these are my favourites, now to decide which to purchase..

Extended Absence

The completion of an online content internship at Whistles where I was able to delve into ecommerce of the online store, social media management and fashion buying has brought out a drive, that I had not known to exist within me. Through working closely with the regional manager and founder, I was able to identify my strengths which is something I have yet to experience at university. Though the internship is completed, I’ve learned a lot about the direction I would like to take upon finishing my degree and luckily, I will be able to continue this streak of exploration by venturing to Sydney to do work placement at Cosmopolitan Australia towards the end of the week. So yeah, that’s what’s been consuming my time, that and soaking up the sunshine of course.

Satisfyingly Chaotic

Something Else Shift Dress • Topshop Premium Heels • Vintage Clutch • Etsy Headpiece

These photos were quickly snapped up in the midst of the mayhem that was Fashion Avenue. Where an array of national as well as local designers showed their latest collections. There was much to be marvelled over as embellished frocks and geometric prints glided over the catwalk. The styling added an additional touch of detail, one of the stand out looks were the tribal prints that were matched with innovative boomerang neckpieces. Hair and makeup was ever evolving as each intermission called for coloured streaks, updos, curled tresses and straight locks. We resisted rummaging through our gift bags, sipped on a few (too many) drinks and enjoyed watermelon and pistachio macaroons. The ambience was truly buzzing, it was a night well spent.

New Dimensions

Thomas Allen has been ripping holes in the art universe in the form of taking apart vintage novels, science books and encyclopaedias. He eviscerates images; making cut outs, then arranges them with pins, glue and tape, takes photographs and then colour corrects the overlapping exposures with editing software. A contributor to the Wall Street Journal since 2011, Allen’s vivid dioramas take on a story line of their own. His work is currently on display at The Foley Gallery in New York which is where the images below can be found.

Into A Gaze

Sass & Bide Dress • Betsey Johnson Boots • Zara Bag • Urban Outfitters Rings • Sportsgirl Necklace

Bitter cold with a side of gale force wind was the weather order that was served up when these photos were taken. Fortunately my sheer chiffon dress doesn’t give away exactly how cold I was feeling at the time, though my hair was involuntarily tousled (courtesy of the breezy streets). The necklace has become a favourite; making a uniformed tee and jeans have a bit of an edge and bares some resemblance to structured, industrial Man The Label pieces.

Are your seams straight?

If you explored the Adelaide Vintage Expo over the weekend then it’s likely that the answer is no. I made an impetuous trip down on Sunday afternoon and needed to pull up my stockings both figuratively and literally. There was an abundance of stalls selling woolen maxis, leather pants, pencil skirts, furs, embellished blouses, sequined dresses, double breasted suit jackets and printed shirts. Not to mention hats, jewelry, bags and shoes galore. It really called out to my inner Betty Draper. A usual skeptic of items labeled ‘vintage’ (the term is often misused), I was delighted to find that most garments had detailed labels of era and prices ranged from $10-$300. There was a pop up tattoo parlor, barbershop, a burlesque show and vintage cars. I nabbed a high waist mini leather skirt for $20 and a brocade silver blouse with black chiffon sleeves for $15 (as seen below). Needless to say, it would be worthwhile going to the next one.

A few stalls have stores in Adelaide and Melbourne that can be checked out below:

The Loft Upstairs

Powderpuff Boutique

Sumadi Boutique
